Carmarthen East & Dinefwr Conservatives Welsh Parliament candidate Havard Hughes has written to Welsh Environment Secretary Lesley Griffiths to demand urgent action on flooding in Carmarthenshire.
Carmarthenshire has now suffered its second extensive flood in just a matter of weeks. Recent years have seen a growth in flooding with existing defences breached.
Havard Hughes, Conservative Candidate for Carmarthen East & Dinefwr commented:
“It obvious to Carmarthenshire residents that the present flood schemes introduced in the 1980s are no longer fit for purpose. We need to see urgent action from Natural Resources Wales ahead of next winter at the very latest.
Over the past few years Carmarthenshire has experienced serious flooding across the whole of the county from Llandysul to Ammanford and Newcastle Emlyn to Carmarthen. With global warming these problems are expected to get worse. We need action now from Cardiff’s Labour government not empty rhetoric.
Looking beyond the immediate future, Natural Resources Wales needs a fundamental overhaul and the introduction of a new agency dedicated to tackling flooding. There has to be a more a more holistic approach involving the whole river network to protect vulnerable communities from flooding.”
